NUDISM as practiced in any country is relative to the taught culture in that country. That is to say that nudism in Germany is not the same thing that is nudism in America, and so on. Even the most intellectual and emotionally mature person can in no way be said to be separate from the culture in which he was raised. The eminent American philosopher, George Santayana, sees us all as puppets dangling on culture’s strings, our actions merely a response to culture’s tug, our lips moving in rhyme to culture’s voice.
Certainly all members of the species AVERAGE AMERICAN CONFORMIST RAT RACE RUNNER (hereafter to be referred to as AACRRR’s) suffer this predicament. Such automatons as they appear to be may possibly have a greater number of strings determining their actions than, say, an emotionally mature professor of philosophy at one of our foremost universities. Be that as it may, it is never more than a matter of degree (the number of determining strings, I mean, not becoming a professor).
Mr. and Mrs. Average American Conformist, busily Running the Rat Race from suburbia to metropolia and back again . .. and again . .. and again, concerned as they are with the rapid-as-possible accumulation of THINGS that will enable them to raise their heads to community level and, fond hope, perhaps even above it, have little time to think beyond the getting of and maintaining of those THINGS to ideas that attach themselves to that lofty realm categorized as philosophical; and if from somewhere out of the mass-media of communications the word “nudism” should confront their eyes or ears, should the manner of its presentation not already have done so, their community-instilled sense of the rightness of things will have, posthaste and with zip-code, demoted the term from the area cerebral to that of the genital.
The title of this little piece purports to be the sum-total of Mr. and Mrs. AACRRR’s exact knowledge on the subject of nudism, plus the question that by this time, having taken on the heretofore-mentioned genital connotation, brightens their normally jaded eyes. “What goes on?” (This of course applies only to that segment of AACRRR’s who have not already become nudists.)
